How Did Salima Tete Rise from Local Khassi Tournaments to Olympic Glory?

Al Jazeera’s recent documentary, India’s Tribal Hockey Triumph, by Rudraneil Sengupta and Olivier le Hellard, explores the deeply rooted hockey culture within the tribal communities of Odisha and Jharkhand. The story is narrated through the journeys of two Indian hockey stars, Salima Tete from Jharkhand and Amit Rohidas from Odisha, the icons of Indian Hockey.

Salima Tete

Passion for the game overcomes any obstacle, and the documentary’s opening scenes depict Salima’s father crafting a hockey stick from bamboo, a symbol of resourcefulness and love for the game. From watching her father play in local Khasi tournaments as a child to eventually captaining the Indian Women’s Hockey Team, Salima has come a long way. She reflects on the poverty, hardships, and challenges her community has endured, recalling how these adversities fuelled her ambition. Her journey reflects the transformation of her homeland, which now proudly celebrates her achievements.

While PR Sreejesh is hailed as “The Wall” of Indian hockey, it wouldn’t be wrong to call Amit Rohidas “The Rock” of the Indian Men’s Hockey Team. Like Salima, Amit’s story is one of humble beginnings. His family, often forced to work as migrant labourers, faced poverty and numerous obstacles before he reached the top of the national level. The passing away of his father before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics added even more purpose to his pursuit, as his father had also dreamed of playing for India. Amit’s dedication contributed to the historic moments at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympics, something that needs no retelling.

Amit Rohidas

The documentary doesn’t focus solely on Salima and Amit but paints a generational portrait of passion for hockey. Their fathers were introduced to the sport through missionaries and aspired to play on big stages. Then Salima and Amit found inspiration in their surroundings, and today the dream continues with the next generation, represented by young Deepak Pradhan, who aspires to reach the Olympics.

Through the lens of these three generations, the documentary depicts the rise of Indian hockey, paralleling the game's transformation within tribal communities in Odisha and Jharkhand. The filmmakers’ use of culturally resonant music, evocative visuals, and impressive drone shots adds depth as characters narrate their journeys. Sengupta and Hellard’s meticulous research and storytelling blend the perspectives of the players and viewers, especially those from these regions.

In recent years, Indian hockey has seen a remarkable resurgence. A sport once considered by many to be a relic of the past has regained its place in the hearts of citizens across India. This documentary celebrates the lives of Salima and Rohidas and the spirit of the entire tribal community, honoring the legacy of those who came before them. With the Hockey India League only a few months away, it serves as a must-watch, a wave of excitement has gripped fans, marking yet another chapter in the story of Indian hockey.
